Global Energy and Environment in the 21st Century
Global Energy and Environment in the 21st Century, or GEE-21, conducts research and educational activities dealing with climate change, energy, water, and environmental issues, and helps translate knowledge to action. GEE-21 focuses on the international climate change process, particularly on the policy, implementation, and science issues related to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP).
Based in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, GEE-21 emphasizes the issues, challenges, and solutions faced by indigenous Hawaiian and Pacific Island nations’ communities. GEE-21 works with its Hawai‘i partners – the William S. Richardson School of Law, Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, UH Better Tomorrow Speaker Series, the State of Hawai‘i’s Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission, and others – to develop a strong and thoughtful workforce, artful policymaking capacity, and a citizenry fluent in the nuances of climate change leadership.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international treaty aimed at combating climate change by stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the annual meeting of UNFCCC member states, where countries assess progress, negotiate agreements, and set global strategies to address climate change.
